Projects & Programs
Adopt A Stream Program
Adopt A Stream is the NSSA’s flagship program, supporting community stewardship and restoration of aquatic habitat across Nova Scotia. To learn more about Adopt A Stream and how to get involved visit our program, please click the following button.
West River Projects
The Nova Scotia Salmon Association has been a leader in the fight against acid rain in Canada. In 2005 we installed North America’s first lime doser, which continues to help local Atlantic salmon thrive and rebound. This ground-breaking work has been so successful that we expanded the project.
Fish Tracking
Using cutting-edge tracking technology, we are getting a rare glimpse into the life of migrating Atlantic salmon and trout. Acoustic telemetry is opening doors to the movement and behaviour of wild fish, helping us to better understand their lives at sea. The more we understand about salmon and trout, the better prepared we are to help.
Watershed Assessment Towards Ecological Recovery
Building on our core work through the Adopt A Stream and the West River Projects, the NSSA is leading WATER Project - Watershed Assessment Towards Ecological Recovery. This is our newest initiative supporting the recovery of Atlantic salmon and four other aquatic species at risk. Drawing on our expertise in habitat restoration and acid rain mitigation, this project is a collaboration between Indigenous groups, academia, private industry, government sectors and many others. Funding is provided by the Canada Nature Fund for Aquatic Species At Risk.
Fish Friends
Fish Friends is a well-loved popular classroom program to raise salmon, and now trout, from eggs to fry in an aquarium. First developed by the Atlantic Salmon Federation more then 25 years ago, it includes lesson plans on topics like life cycle, egg development, habitat, and threats. In Nova Scotia, many NSSA affiliates, local river associations and environmental groups actively support the program in their community schools.
